John Candelaria(16-7) and Dick Ruthven(12-10) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Candelaria and the Kimberton Firefighters coming out on top of the Eagle
Eagles 1-0.
Candelaria had a strong outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5
hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Kimberton managed only 6 hits on the
afternoon.
Skip Lockwood recorded his 30th save.

Third baseman Mike Schmidt smacked 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Ed Halicki
completed the game without help from the bullpen at Bentley Stadium where the
Elverson Squires beat the Glenmoore Stableboys 9-5.
Schmidt enjoyed a big day at the plate. He popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 3rd inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th inning,
stroked a base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning and smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 9th inning. Elverson had a total of 10 hits for
the game.
The win was credited to Halicki(10-12) who went the whole way allowing 5 runs.
Rick Rhoden(11-8) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 4 homeruns in
his 9 innings of work.
'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Schmidt said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'

Phil Niekro(15-12) and Tommy John(10-12) dueled it out with Niekro and the
Chester Springs ballclub coming out on top of the Devault Dynamiters 1-0.
Chester Springs started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their
half of the first scoring a single run. That early run support was enough
for Niekro and Chester Springs. Devault had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.
Charlie Hough earned his 34th save. Barney Charney was in a sour mood after
the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost this game. We
made too many mistakes.'

Mark Lemongello went the distance at Hopewell Field as the Honey Brook
Beekeepers beat the Guthriesville Golddiggers 3-2.
Guthriesville lost it in the 3rd inning when Honey Brook did all their damage
plating 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Art Howe led off and keyed the rally
when he laced a base-hit. Johnnie Lemaster followed and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Cesar Geronimo then stroked a one-base hit. Geronimo got a
great jump and stole second easily. After another out, Gary Matthews came to
bat and drew a walk. Cliff Johnson kept things alive and doubled. That was
all Lemongello(3-0) needed. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd
inning with no runs scored after that point.
Larry Dierker(6-14) was given the loss. Despite losing, he struck out 11 Honey
Brook batters in 8 innings.
