302 fans were treated to a fine game at Hopewell Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Devault Dynamiters won by the
slimmest of margins, 6-5.
In the 7th inning Devault went on top for good plating an isolated run on 4
base hits. After an out was recorded, Dave Kingman lined a one-base hit.
Del Unser followed next and he lined a base-hit. Gary Carter then banged out
a single. Carter took second on the throw. Larry Parrish followed and he
laced a base-knock. Guthriesville threatened in the 9th but their rally came
up short.
Tom Griffin(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Bruce
Sutter earned the save, his 1st. Jim Kaat(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He
surrendered 6 runs and 10 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us tonight' Gary Scott
said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to
take.'

Ron Cey connected with a 'big fly' and had 5 RBI at The Nest where the
Marshallton Mad Hatters beat the Honey Brook Beekeepers 17-12.
Cey had a big day with his bat. He ripped a base-hit plating a run in the 2nd
inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 7th inning and lost the ball over the
fence for three runs in the 9th inning. Marshallton bats were hot in the 7th
inning with 6 runs on 6 hits. Honey Brook scored in 5 different innings, but
their shaky pitching kept them from victory.
Eddie Solomon(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Joe Kerrigan(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He
was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

In a thrilling finish the Elverson Squires won in dramatic fashion coming back
to beat the Eagle Eagles 6-5.
Elverson had the game winning rally in the 9th inning as they scored 5 runs on
4 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Steve Garvey who
elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he popped a two-run clout over
the fence. Elverson totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Mike Garman(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing 2 runs.
The loss was charged to Bill Atkinson(0-2) in relief.
'What a win!', Garman said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in
your mind at the end of a season.'
