8/14/76: Lionville Overcomes Guthriesville, 6-3
Tiger-Cats manager Jon Brams:
The Diggers have improved quite a bit since we last saw them. They're not intimidated by us anymore. They made us work for it this afternoon, but we got some clutch hitting in the 8th for a 3-spot and that was the difference. Kenny Reitz had the big hit, a 2-out, 2-run single to break a 2-2 tie - heady baserunning by Leon on that play. Kranepool had a big day, 4 hits, a triple short of a cycle. Lefty tossed a couple of melon balls to Lopes and Cedeno, but fortunately nobody was on base at the time. Other than that Lefty was pretty good. Sambito had my ticker racing, but he got the save. He was lucky Barry Foote got under that last pitch a little bit. That was 20 feet short of a game-tying 3-run shot to left. I'm glad I had subbed Martin for Leon. Whew!

Tiger-Cats manager Jon Brams:
Friday the 13th, eh? That was gruesome! I had to laugh after Leon got a pinch single to lead off the 9th and then was promptly picked off. It was a fitting capper to a debacle. Our best pitchers - Randy and Ron Reed - couldn't get anybody out, especially Cedeno who looked like a superhero out there. Randy's 20th win stays on hold. Anyway, good to have Simba back in the lineup. Tomorrow I expect Joe will be ready - he's due to go on a tear. And Lefty should be able to swing the momentum in this series our way.

Elverson scored the winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Al Oliver who excited the crowd when he rifled a three-run blast. Chester Springs was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. Al Hrabosky(5-2) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Charlie Hough(6-7) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 2 hits and 1 walk. John Carney was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!' The biggest moment was provided by Dave Kingman who silenced the crowd when he slapped a single scoring two baserunners. Marshallton made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. The victory was credited to Woodie Fryman(6-11) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs. Fryman was helped out by Sutter who recorded his 24th save. Steve Renko(8-7) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 7 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work.
