Eagle brought 2 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they came up with 3 base hits. That early run support was enough for Don Stanhouse(2-3) and Eagle. Chester Springs threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Randy Moffitt gained credit for his 20th save. Phil Niekro(9-9) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Chester Springs had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Mike Jorgensen led off and he stroked a one-base hit. Jose Cardenal stepped up to the plate and he ripped a base-hit. Cardenal took second on the throw. Larry Bowa then hit a deep fly. Rick Monday followed next and he was hit by a pitch. Winfield came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. After another out, Hector Cruz came to bat and stroked a single. Chester Springs kept the scorekeepers busy in the 4th inning with 3 runs on 5 hits and the 9th inning when they had 3 runs on 3 hits. Eagle was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. The win went to Charlie Hough(6-5) who allowed 3 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Bob Moose earned his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Ramon Hernandez(0-5) in relief. He allowed Chester Springs 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. Honey Brook jumped on top to stay in the 6th inning scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Dave Cash who elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he lined a single scoring two baserunners. Honey Brook had 12 hits for the afternoon while Guthriesville had 9. The win was credited to Jerry Koosman(9-2) who went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs. Darold Knowles was credited with his 3rd save. Larry Christenson(3-8) took the loss. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Koosman said, 'this was one of those times.' Kimberton scored 2 runs in the decisive bottom of the 7th inning. After an out was recorded, Jerry Grote kicked off the action when he laced a base-knock. One out later, Manny Trillo came up and he clubbed a two-run home run. Devault could do no damage in the 9th. Jim Lonborg(9-9) went 8 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Skip Lockwood recorded his 21st save. The losing pitcher was Woodie Fryman(5-10). Kimberton came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Manny Trillo opened up the rally as he laced a single, and an error was also committed. George Mitterwald followed next and he lined a base-hit. Jerry Mumphrey was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Jose Cruz was up next and he doubled. Taveras stepped into the box and ripped a single. Kimberton finished with 12 hits while Devault ended up with 9. Don Carrithers(3-7) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Bruce Sutter(3-4) was charged with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 2/3 of an inning. 'That was exciting!,' Taveras said. 'I would have paid money to watch this one.' Halicki(7-8) pitched a fine game. He went 9 innings and surrended up 8 hits and 2 walks. Elverson had 11 hits for the afternoon. Frank Lacorte(5-6) absorbed the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. LIONVILLE AT MARSHALLTON Tiger-Cats...... 1 1 0 0 2 0 0 0 2 - 6 11 0 Mad Hatters..... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 6 2 Win:Jones(18-3) Loss:Strom(12-5) Homeruns- J.Morgan(21st) Randy Jones hurled a fine complete game shutout at Four Dogs Field where the very strong Lionville team beat the Marshallton Mad Hatters 6-0. Jones(18-3) was very good in the win. He gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Lionville totaled 11 hits on the afternoon. Brent Strom(12-5) was the losing pitcher.
