Second baseman Rennie Stennett had 2 base hits and Phil Niekro allowed Jim
Ghoulach to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at The Nest as the
Chester Springs club won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Honey
Brook Beekeepers 3-2.
 
Chester Springs had the game winning rally in the 9th inning plating 3 runs
using 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Stennett was the sparkplug when he
singled.  Gary Thomasson stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Bobby Valentine
then doubled.  Rick Monday stepped in and he worked the squeeze play to
perfection.  Rich Chiles stepped into the box and slapped a single.  Jose
Cardenal struck out, unable to help the rally.  Jerry Royster got his turn
next, but he was a strikeout victim.  Both teams ended up with 6 hits on the
afternoon.  
 
The win went to Niekro(7-6) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Pete Falcone(5-8)
was the loser.  He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 7
walks.
 
'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Falcone said. 'The bottom line is I
didn't get the job done.  Our fans deserve better than this.'

Mike Schmidt knocked 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the Elverson Squires
defeated the Devault Dynamiters 6-5 at French Creek Park.
 
Schmidt provided much of the offense.  He lashed a single in the 1st inning,
clubbed a solo home run in the 6th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the
park in the 8th inning.  Devault made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
The winning pitcher was Doug Rau(7-5) who allowed 4 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Elias Sosa earned his 3rd save.  The losing pitcher was Tommy John(5-5).  He
served up 3 gopher balls in 8 innings.

In a thriller the Eagle Eagles staged a dramatic comeback then held on to win
over the lifeless Guthriesville Golddiggers 4-3 at Hopewell Field.
 
Eagle scored the winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4
base hits.  Dave Parker started the inning off right when he delivered a
one-base hit.  After an out was recorded, Dick Allen stepped up to the plate
and he lined a single.  Earl Williams then belted a three-run homer.  Manny
Sanguillen was up next and he banged out a single.  After another out, Pete
Rose got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.  Eagle
finished with 10 hits in the victory.  
 
The victory went to Mike Marshall(4-3) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1
run. Ramon Hernandez preserved the game for Marshall, recording his his 4th.
Ken Forsch(1-6) ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 5 hits and
no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.  
 
Bob Phillips was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence.  Weird. but GREAT!'
 
KIMBERTON AT MARSHALLTON

The Marshallton Mad Hatters and the Kimberton Firefighters locked up in an
exciting one-run game at Four Dogs Field.  The final score was the
Marshallton Mad Hatters 4, the Kimberton Firefighters 3.
 
Steve Dunning(5-0) looked good in relief and was the winning pitcher.  He
didn't allow much, just 1 hit and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.  Marshallton
had 12 hits for the game and Kimberton had 4.  
 
Rawly Eastwick gained credit for his 18th save.  Larry Demery(4-3) absorbed
the loss.  He allowed 12 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings.  
 
 
LIONVILLE AT GLENMOORE

Merv Rettenmund had 2 base hits and Frank Lacorte threw a 3 hitter as the
Glenmoore Stableboys won at Bentley Stadium in dramatic fashion over the
Lionville ballclub, the final score, 2-1.
 
The game was decided in the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded, Dave
Concepcion ripped a one-base hit.  Willie Montanez stepped up next and he
laced a base-hit.  Johnny Bench then drew a walk to load the bases.  Rob
Andrews followed next and he lined a one-base hit making Glenmoore victorious
to the delight of the the home town crowd.  Glenmoore managed 9 hits in their
victory.  
 
Lacorte(4-5), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Randy
Jones(12-3) was given the loss.  He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits
and 1 walk.
