Phil Niekro was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and Dave Winfield went yard and had 2 RBI as the Chester
Springs ballclub beat the Kimberton Firefighters 5-3.
 
Niekro(9-6) pitched a fine game.  He went 9 innings and surrended up 10 hits
and 4 walks.  The Kimberton batters didn't put up a fight in the 9th.  
 
John Candelaria(9-7) was the losing pitcher.  'I was a little good, a little
bad and a little ugly.' said Niekro, 'I was just giving us a chance to win.'

Del Unser blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Devault Dynamiters staged a
dramatic comeback over the Eagle Eagles 4-3 at Hickory Park.
 
Devault scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on
4 hits.  Gary Carter led off and he singled.  Unser followed next and he
clubbed a two-run home run.  Garry Maddox then doubled.  Two outs later Bill
Atkinson came to bat and was wild with a pitch.  Phil Garner came up to bat
and lined a single.  For the game Devault out-hit Eagle 10-4.  
 
The win was credited to Rick Sawyer(3-5) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing no
runs. Sawyer got relief help from Bruce Sutter who gained credit for his 20th
save.  Rick Reuschel(7-3) was hit with the loss.  
 
Bob Phillips was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough
loss.  He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a
terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to
lose.  Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin'
on us this afternoon'
 
MARSHALLTON AT GUTHRIESVILLE

The Marshallton Mad Hatters endured an embarrassing pasting as a potent
Guthriesville Golddiggers lineup tallied 14 runs while Jim Kaat(5-4), with
relief help from Grant Jackson, held Marshallton to 1 run.
 
Guthriesville took the lead for keeps in the 5th inning when they scored 3
runs on 2 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Don Kessinger who brought
the crowd to their feet when he lined a one-base hit which was good for two
runs.  Guthriesville had 13 hits for the game and Marshallton had 7.
 
Jackson recorded his 3rd save.  Paul Moskau(2-6) was the loser.  He pitched 5
innings and surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks.
 
GLENMOORE AT HONEY BROOK

Pete Falcone delivered 9 solid innings as the Honey Brook Beekeepers topped
the Glenmoore Stableboys 2-1 at The Nest.
 
Falcone(2-2) escaped virtually unscathed against the Glenmoore hitters.  He
didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.  Honey Brook and
Glenmoore each finished the night with 4 hits.  
 
Gene Garber(4-3) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and
3 hits in 1 inning.
 
LIONVILLE AT ELVERSON

In a good matchup it was the Elverson Squires 5, the Lionville club 2 at
French Creek Park.
 
Doug Rau(6-6) pitched well for Elverson in their victory.  He went 7 innings
allowing 12 hits and 1 walk.  Despite losing, Lionville out-hit Elverson 13-9.
 
Mike Garman preserved the game for Rau, recording his his 14th. Steve
Carlton(10-7) took the loss.  Elverson continued their winning ways, with
their streak now at 6 games and counting. 'We've really come alive lately,'
John Carney said. 'We won some tough games and I feel real good about this
ballclub right now, and hopefully we'll continue the roll we're on.'
