May 4, 1976 Recaps

CHESTER SPRINGS AT EAGLE

418 fans watched an exciting game at Hickory Park.  The Eagle Eagles (10-10)
topped the Chester Springs (9-11) team by the slimmest of margins, 4-3.
 
Eagle had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 4 base hits.  Bud Harrelson led off the inning for Eagle when he
banged out a single.  After an out was recorded, Billy Baldwin came to the
plate and doubled.  After another out, Dave Parker stepped in and he doubled.
Charlie Hough then let loose a wild pitch.  Dan Driessen stepped into the
box and ripped a single.  Chester Springs threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.  
 
Randy Moffitt(1-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Ramon
Hernandez recorded the save, his 1st.  Hough(1-1) was hit with the loss in
relief.  He pitched 1 inning giving up 3 hits and no walks.
 
Bob Phillips was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
 
MARSHALLTON AT GLENMOORE

Doug Flynn had 3 base hits and J.R. Richard allowed John Young to rest his
bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Marshallton Mad Hatters (10-10) defeated
the Glenmoore Stableboys (9-9) by a score of 5-1 at Bentley Stadium.
 
Richard(3-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He didn't give up much,
just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.94 to 2.53.
Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after
that point.  
 
The losing pitcher was Paul Reuschel(0-1) in relief.  He was knocked around
pretty good, giving up 4 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.  
 
 
DEVAULT AT KIMBERTON

Eric Rasmussen(1-2) and Lynn McGlothen(2-3) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Rasmussen and the Kimberton Firefighters (8-12) coming out on top
of the Devault Dynamiters (11-8) 3-1.
 
In the 3rd inning Kimberton scored 2 runs when they came up with 3 base hits.
That early run support was all that Rasmussen required.  Overall Kimberton
out-hit Devault 7 to 3.  
 
Skip Lockwood preserved the game for Rasmussen, recording his his 3rd.
 
ELVERSON AT GUTHRIESVILLE

Steve Garvey collected 2 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI as the Elverson
Squires (10-11) outscored the Guthriesville Golddiggers (6-14) 9-2.
 
Guthriesville never recovered after Elverson took the lead in the 3rd inning
scoring 3 runs using 2 hits.  After two outs Mike Schmidt started the attack
as he stroked a base-hit.  Ken Henderson next to the plate and he drew a
walk.  John Milner then drew a walk to load the bases.  Garvey followed and
he tripled.  Joe Ferguson dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.
That was all Doug Rau(2-3) needed.  Elverson out-hit Guthriesville for the
game, 13 hits to 5.  
 
The loss was charged to Andy Messersmith(1-3).  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 10 hits and 8 walks in 7 innings.  
 
 
HONEY BROOK AT LIONVILLE

Ed Kranepool had 2 base hits as the Lionville (13-6) ballclub won in dramatic
fashion over the Honey Brook Beekeepers (12-7) by a score of 4-2 at
Foster Field.
 
Lionville won the game with a rally in the 9th inning plating 3 runs on 2 base
hits.  Chris Speier led off and he slapped a base-hit.  Joe Morgan stepped up
next and he reached on an error.  After an out was recorded, Jerry Morales
came to bat and clubbed a three-run home run resulting in an exciting win for
Lionville and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.
Lionville had 10 hits for the night while Honey Brook had 6.  
 
The victory was credited to Ron Reed(1-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
Tug McGraw(1-1) was the loser in relief.  He gave up 2 hits and no walks in
1/3 of an inning.  
 
'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Kranepool noted.  'It was
looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it
really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there
at the end!'
