April 23, 1976 Recaps

GLENMOORE AT EAGLE

Mickey Lolich pitched a complete game and Johnny Bench had 4 hits and 4 RBI as
the Glenmoore Stableboys (3-5) staged a dramatic comeback over the Eagle Eagles (5-5) by
a score of 5-4 at Hickory Park.
 
Glenmoore had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning plating 2
runs on 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Bake McBride got things
rolling when he ripped a single.  Merv Rettenmund was next and he drew a
walk.  Ramon Hernandez then fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to
cross-up the catcher.  In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed
ball.  One out later, Bench came to the plate and lined a single.  Dave
Concepcion stepped into the box and drew a walk.  The Eagle bats were silent
in the bottom of the 9th.  
 
The win was credited to Lolich(2-0) who went the whole way allowing 4 runs.
Randy Moffitt(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He pitched 1 inning and
surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.
 
Barry Bentley was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win
it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up.  And did you see the
fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win tonight!'
 
CHESTER SPRINGS AT MARSHALLTON

Garry Templeton had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Marshallton Mad Hatters (4-6)
outscored the Chester Springs (3-7) club 7-5.
 
Marshallton took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 4th inning as they
scored 3 runs on 3 base hits.  Chester Springs had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.  
 
J.R. Richard(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 5 runs. Rawly Eastwick earned the save, his 3rd.  Jack
Billingham(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  
 
Jim Ghoulach was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts.  If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'
 
DEVAULT AT HONEY BROOK

Jay Johnstone had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Honey Brook Beekeepers (7-2) defeated
the Devault Dynamiters (6-3) by a score of 7-6 at The Nest.
 
In the 2nd inning Honey Brook scored 5 runs when they came up with 5 base
hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Johnstone who came through for
the home fans when he laced a single bringing in two baserunners.  Devault
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
Doc Medich(2-0) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Tug McGraw
gained credit for his 3rd save.  Joaquin Andujar(0-1) absorbed the loss.  
 
 
KIMBERTON AT ELVERSON

997 fans were treated to a fine game at French Creek Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Elverson Squires (4-6) won by the
slimmest of margins, 3-2, over the Kimberton Firefighters (5-5).
 
Elverson set the tone of the game in the first inning plating an isolated run.
Kimberton threatened in the 9th but Elverson was able to put down the rally.
 
Ed Halicki(1-1) went 8 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Al Hrabosky got the
save, his 2nd.  Larry Demery(1-1) was given the loss.  He got hit hard,
allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.  
 
 
GUTHRIESVILLE AT LIONVILLE

The Lionville (7-2) team nipped the Guthriesville Golddiggers (3-6) 4-3 at Foster Field
in a hard fought contest.
 
In the 6th inning Lionville went on top for good scoring a single run.  After
two outs Jim Wynn hit a bases-empty home run.  Guthriesville was set down
quietly in the 9th.  
 
Burt Hooton(3-0) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Ron
Reed recorded his 1st save.  The loss was charged to Andy Messersmith(1-1).
