Right fielder Reggie Smith left the yard as the Kimberton Firefighters won a
dandy at Kimberton Fairground over the Eagle Eagles, 2-1.
 
The game was won by Kimberton with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Bill Madlock stroked a base-hit.  Madlock took second on a stolen base.
George Mitterwald then ripped a one-base hit giving Kimberton the win as 845
happy fans joyfully celebrated.  The teams had been locked in a scoreless
duel until the 6th inning.  
 
Dan Larson(2-4) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory. The
losing pitcher was Randy Moffitt(2-7) in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 2 hits
in 2/3 of an inning.

Phil Niekro was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Historic Village Park as the very strong Chester Springs
ballclub beat the Devault Dynamiters 5-2.
 
Chester Springs scored 2 runs in the decisive bottom of the 3rd inning when
they came up with 3 base hits.  That was all Niekro(13-6) needed.  Chester
Springs managed 9 hits in their victory.  
 
Jackie Brown(3-7) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 9 hits and 3
walks.
 
ELVERSON AT GLENMOORE, 1st

Johnny Bench had 3 base hits as the Glenmoore Stableboys defeated the Elverson
Squires by a score of 4-3 at Bentley Stadium.
 
Glenmoore tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning.  The critical plate
appearance was by Richie Hebner who electrified Bentley Stadium when he
lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.  Elverson threatened in
the 9th but Glenmoore was able to put down the rally.  
 
The win was credited to Rick Rhoden(7-8) who went 8 innings allowing 3 runs.
Rhoden got help from Gene Garber who was credited with his 13th save.  Doug
Rau(6-9) absorbed the loss.  He gave up 6 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.
 
Despite losing John Carney was optimistic after the game.  'We'll get over
this one.  Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't.  Any one
of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
 
ELVERSON AT GLENMOORE, 2nd

Floyd Bannister threw a 2 hit shutout as the Glenmoore Stableboys defeated the
Elverson Squires 2-0 at Bentley Stadium.
 
Bannister(5-9) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Elverson offense.
He allowed only 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.83.
Glenmoore banged out 9 hits on the night.  
 
Ed Halicki(9-9) was the losing pitcher.  'We didn't have a whole lot of
chances tonight,' John Carney said.  'Bannister just was too much for our
guys.'
 
HONEY BROOK AT GUTHRIESVILLE

Jerry Koosman racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts as the Honey
Brook Beekeepers outscored the Guthriesville Golddiggers 9-1.
 
Koosman(10-7) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Honey Brook had
a total of 11 hits for the game.  
 
Buzz Capra(3-7) ended up with the loss. He allowed Honey Brook 5 runs in 4 and
1/3 innings of work.  Koosman didn't realize how many strikeouts he was
racking up.  When told he had 11 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding?
Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that
many.  Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'
 
MARSHALLTON AT LIONVILLE

The Lionville team won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Marshallton Mad Hatters at
Foster Field pulling it out in their last at bats, 5-4.
 
Lionville scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Joe Morgan
lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Lionville and the 278 home town fans in attendance.  Overall Lionville
out-hit Marshallton 12-9.  
 
The victory was credited to Joe Sambito(3-3) who went 3 innings, allowing 1
run. Rollie Fingers(0-7) was tagged with the loss in relief.
