May 16, 1976 Recaps

EAGLE AT HONEY BROOK, 1st

Dick Ruthven completed the game without help from the bullpen at The Nest
where the Eagle Eagles (17-15) beat the Honey Brook Beekeepers (16-15) 12-4.
 
George Foster led the offense for Eagle.  He ripped a base-knock which brought
home a run in the 4th inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs
in the 8th inning.  Eagle rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.
 
Ruthven(2-3) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. Pete
Falcone(3-3) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 2 hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of
an inning.

In a dramatic ending at The Nest the Honey Brook Beekeepers (17-15) won in
their last at-bat beating the Eagle Eagles (17-16) by the count of 3-2.
 
The game was won by Honey Brook with a run in the 9th inning.  Steve Swisher
reached on an error.  Enzo Hernandez followed next and he delivered a single.
After an out was recorded, Art Howe came up and he slapped a base-hit to
load the bases.  Jay Johnstone stepped in and he ripped a one-base hit making
Honey Brook the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.  Honey
Brook out-hit Eagle for the game, 11 hits to 8.  
 
Tug McGraw(3-1) allowed 2 runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. The
losing pitcher was Chip Lang(1-1) in relief.  The Honey Brook ballclub's
record now stands at 17-15.  With the loss, the Eagle ballclub's record is
17-16.

Larry Herndon had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Glenmoore Stableboys (14-15) bested the
Devault Dynamiters (15-15) 7-6 at Great Valley Stadium.
 
Obviously without his best stuff, Paul Reuschel(1-2) still hung on to pick up
the win.  He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings.  Devault had a chance in the 9th
but they came up short.  
 
Gene Garber recorded the save, his 5th.  Tommy John(1-2) was given the loss.
Glenmoore scored big getting 7 runs off him in 6 and 2/3 innings.  
 
 
GUTHRIESVILLE AT CHESTER SPRINGS, 1st

Phil Niekro went 9 solid innings as the Chester Springs (17-15) ballclub
defeated the Guthriesville Golddiggers (8-22) 2-1 at Historic Village Park.
 
In the 2nd inning Chester Springs went on top for good plating one baserunner
utilizing 2 base hits.  Guthriesville was set down quietly in the 9th.  
 
The victory was credited to Niekro(3-2) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.
Jim Kaat(2-3) was the loser.  'He had his 'A' game today,' Jim Ghoulach said
of Niekro.  'Very impressive performance.'

Bobby Murcer hit a homerun as the Guthriesville Golddiggers (9-22) outscored
the Chester Springs (17-16) team 8-7.
 
The game was won by Guthriesville when they scored a run in the top of the 9th
inning.  Bobby Tolan was hit by a pitch.  Lopes then stole second base.
Charlie Hough then was wild with a pitch.  One out later, Cesar Cedeno came
to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly.  It was roller coaster of a game as the
lead change hands 5 times.  
 
John Curtis(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Curtis got relief help from Ken Forsch who gained credit
for his 4th save.  Hough(2-3) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He allowed
no hits and no walks in 1 inning.  
 
 
MARSHALLTON AT ELVERSON, 1st

The Marshallton Mad Hatters (16-16) put 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th inning
and toppled the Elverson Squires (15-16) by a 12-8 score at French Creek Park.
 
Steve Dunning(1-0) put in a pedestrian relief performance just good enough for
the victory.  He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 3 and 2/3 innings and mowed
down 4 Elverson batters.  Marshallton had 17 hits for the afternoon while
Elverson had 10.  
 
Mike Garman(0-2) suffered the loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 7 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.
 
MARSHALLTON AT ELVERSON, 2nd

1,851 fans were treated to a fine game at French Creek Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Marshallton Mad Hatters (17-16) won
by the slimmest of margins, 10-9, over the Elverson Squires (15-17).
 
Bill Buckner enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He cracked a two-run shot in the
1st inning and delivered a one-base hit knocking in a run in the 7th inning.
Elverson made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.  
 
Steve Dunning(2-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Rawly Eastwick
gained credit for his 7th save.  Dave Heaverlo(0-1) suffered the loss in
relief.  He surrendered 1 hit and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.  
 
 
LIONVILLE AT KIMBERTON, 1st

First baseman Ed Kranepool added four ribbies to his seasonal total with one
swing of the bat as the Lionville (23-8) ballclub defeated the Kimberton
Firefighters (13-17) by a score of 10-1 at Kimberton Fairground.
 
Kranepool had a big day at the plate.  He banged out a single in the 4th
inning, cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 5th inning and
stroked a one-base hit in the 9th inning.  Kimberton was out-hit by
Lionville, 14 hits to 7.  
 
The win was credited to Bruce Kison(3-1) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run.
Dan Larson(1-1) was given the loss.  He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 and
2/3 innings.  
 
 
LIONVILLE AT KIMBERTON, 2nd

In a game for the baseball purist, Ron Reed(4-2) and Jim Lonborg(3-3) squared
off in a tense pitching duel, Lionville (24-8) club finally emerged
victorious over Kimberton Firefighters (13-18), 2-1.
 
In the top of the 6th inning Lionville scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits.
They would prove to be the difference in the contest.  The game was a
scoreless duel until the 6th inning.  
 
Max Leon earned his 1st save.
