John Candelaria completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Kimberton Firefighters bested the Marshallton Mad Hatters in 10 innings
4-3 at Kimberton Fairground.
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Kimberton came out
on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Pepe Mangual singled.
Greg Gross stepped up to the plate and he lined a single. Gross took second
on the throw. Reggie Smith then was walked intentionally. Bill Madlock
followed and he laced a base-hit giving Kimberton the victory as 1,492 happy
fans celebrated wildly. Marshallton out-hit Kimberton 10 to 7, but Kimberton
ended up with more runs.
The win was credited to Candelaria(1-0) who went the whole way allowing 3
runs. The losing pitcher was Charlie Williams(0-1) in relief.
GUTHRIESVILLE AT EAGLE

Don Kessinger blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Guthriesville Golddiggers
topped the Eagle Eagles by a score of 8-1 at Hickory Park.
Andy Messersmith(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed
only 5 hits and 5 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Overall Guthriesville out-hit
Eagle 11 to 5.
Dick Ruthven(0-1) was hit with the loss. He pitched 5 innings allowing 7 hits
and 3 walks.

Garry Maddox had 3 base hits and Woodie Fryman delivered 9 solid innings at
Great Valley Stadium where the Devault Dynamiters beat the Elverson Squires 6-1.
Fryman(1-0) had a strong outing. He allowed just 6 hits and no walks in 9
innings. Devault totaled 10 hits on the night.
John Denny(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 2 walks
in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Jerry Koosman held Chester Springs scoreless on just 3 hits as the Honey Brook
Beekeepers outscored the Chester Springs team 8-0.
Koosman(1-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Chester Springs
offense. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.
Honey Brook managed 13 hits in their victory.
Jerry Reuss(0-1) took the loss. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and surrendered
9 hits and no walks. Jim Ghoulach was obviously impressed with the pitching
of Koosman, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight. We just
couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope
that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'
